Plagued by pests?  Bugged by bugs?

Some common household insects & rodents include ants, cockroaches, various rodents, flies & spiders.  These unwelcome vermin can range from being mere nuisances to real health hazards.

According to www.abouthome.com, "Pests can and do invade every aspect of our lives, whether they are insect, mammal, plant, bird. or pathogen. This category identifies pests through photos, examines their biology and behavior and guides the reader in deciding whether their home, garden, farm, school or workplace is infested."

Don't panic!  There ARE several things you can do to combat these critters:

  • The first step is to make sure food scraps or crumbs are cleaned up & dirty dishes are NOT left out
  • Check for any standing water & damp areas around the home - promptly address these issues as they attract insects
  • Make sure trash cans are tightly covered & take it out often.  Do NOT inadvertently feed any unwelcome guests
  • Vacuum & sweep floors regularly
  • Caulk any nooks/crannies that pests may be using to gain entrance
  • Bathe pets often to avoid fleas
Several essential oils may be used to repel pests as well.  Some include:  citronella, pine, lavender, peppermint, patchouli, sandalwood & rosemary.  Place a few drops of selected oil into a ribbon or cotton ball & place in problem areas.  Take care to keep pets away.

All of these DIY options are great & certainly can help prevent vermin from making themselves at home in YOUR home.  But, when do you throw in the towel?  When do you admit defeat & call in a pro?
